Summer Sale: 5 Last Minute Trends to Try

Attention online shoppers: As your favorite boutiques stock their sites with fall items, I would like to kindly remind you that this summer is not over yet!

I’d like to deem August as the hottest month of all (in more ways than one). This eighth month of the year is the grand finale of my favorite, sun-loving season and is the best time to perfect those summer 2012 trends. Don’t be bashful now! Add a pop of vibrant color to an everyday outfit or flaunt your figure with peplum. After all, there is still a good month or two before bikinis and flip flops have to make their descent into closet hibernation. Let’s embrace the present, and do so in style!

Not everyone is fortunate enough to live on the beach all summer, but that doesn’t mean embracing that enviable, laissez faire style is off limits for the rest of us. The “beach babe” look doesn’t always easily translate from the seaside to the cityscape, though. Unless you happen to be Gwen Stefani, the chances of pulling off a bikini top away from the ocean are slim to none. There is still hope, however, for capturing the essence of surf and sand while pounding the pavement. So, I’ve come up with some key guidelines on how to make the most of your beach pieces in the concrete jungle. Now if only I could figure out how to actually bring the ocean to the city…

As if having to work during the summertime isn’t bad enough, showing up to the office drenched in sweat at 9 o’clock in the morning is just the icing on the cake (thanks, heat wave!). Living in New York City and braving the inferno that is midtown on a daily basis (hello swarms of tourists, bazillion degree subway) is especially grueling when doing the whole nine-to-five thing. It got so bad the other week that I was tempted to show up in a one piece and a sarong and call it a day. Thankfully, I took the sane (yet financially detrimental) route the next weekend and power-shopped, setting out to build a heat-resistant wardrobe so I didn’t have to arrive at my new gig looking like I had just ran a half-marathon.

Lately I have been reflecting back on the clothes of yesterday’s past. As a child of the 90′s I have had my share of, shall we say, interesting looks. Many of which I intend to keep where I left them, I reiterate, in the 90′s. But then there are some looks that bring back a certain sense of childhood nostalgia. As it is mid-summer, I find it appropriate to give homage to the days of summer camp (or shall I say the clothes of summer camp). As a child I spent a week each summer at a camp in the San Bernardino mountains. Packing those days was such a breeze as I always had my staple camp clothes: jean shorts, bandanas, sneakers, and that over-sized tee with the camp’s logo on it (you know what I’m talking about). Wearing them, I’d partake in arts and crafts, ride horses, kayak, hike through trails and sing a little, “Kumbaya”. Although these days I would much rather spend a week in a tropical paradise or at a music festival, it’s time to bring summer camp clothes back and give them a little facelift in the process.

Go:  To the Beach
I don’t know about you, but New York has been experiencing some serious heat waves lately. In order to escape the high temperatures, we recommend taking a day trip (or two) to the nearest beach. With the waves crashing against the surf and a cold drink in your hand, you’ll forget all about that sticky city heat.

Listen:  The Very Best of The Beach Boys
When it comes to warm-weather tunes you cant go wrong with the Beach Boys. Roll the windows down and enjoy songs like “California Girls” and “Surfin’ USA” the way they were meant to be heard: with the salty summer wind in your hair.

Wear:  Bikini  |  Hat  |  Sunglasses  |  Shorts  | Sandals  |  Luminizer  |  Tote
I’m a firm believer that a girl can never have too many bikinis, and this retro suit fits perfectly into anyone’s closet. For added sun protection and a little extra flair, throw on a brimmed hat and some old-school sunnies. When stepping off the sand is unavoidable, cover up with white-washed high-waisted shorts.

Read:  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
Once you’ve got the sand between your toes it’s time to dive into a great read. Sure, your classic chick lit is fun, but after Tina Fey’s brilliant editorial debut with Bossypants, we’re into something with a little more substance. This weekend get your hands on Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and other concerns) for a good laugh.
