Nail Tutorial: Prada Pastels

Sorbet Separates, Palatable Pastels… Whatever you’d like to title it, soft pastel hues are a major trend in Spring 2012 collections. Pastels in Spring? “How original,” you might think, but this season took a different spin on the soft palette, adding the craze of color blocking to the mix. No longer must you match white or khaki pants to your orange sherbet colored blouse. Why not try a pair in periwinkle instead?

Looking back at the Spring 2012 collections I was surprised to find Prada, a fashion house known for strikingly bright colors and retro prints, send pastel down the runway look after look. Normally they leave the girly-girl hues for Miu Miu, their “daughter” brand. Prada’s pretty pastel ensembles inspired me to create these two nails tutorials:

If you’re like me, springtime demands transition – and not just from heavy winter fashion, but for makeup as well. Out of all the beauty secrets for the season I’ve chosen three must-haves every fabulous girl should own.

1. Setting Spray
Because  I have very oily skin in the spring, I use Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray to keep my makeup set for 16 hours, as well as my oil shine low. If you don’t have oily skin, you can also try Biolage by Matrix Thermal-Active Setting Spray or MAC Fix+

2.Bronzer
Giving yourself that sun kissed glow is always great for spring and summer. While I am a huge fan of Black Radiance Artisan Color Baked Bronzer in Gingersnap (it really brings out the gold in darker complexions), two other great products include NARS highlighting/bronzing blush duo and TRUblends mineral bronzer from Covergirl.

3. Lip Butter
Lip butters are a great replacement to lipstick. REVLON has come out with a line of lip butters in spring complimentary colors beautiful in all shades. Check out all the colors offered!

Spring is a time for cleaning out that messy closet full of cashmere sweaters and wool skirts of seasons past. This also conveniently leaves a little extra space for one or two (or five) brand new editions to the old wardrobe. March through May is all about rebirth anyway, right? Read on for my top spring essentials, just in case you ever feel the need to take the credit card for a spin.

Would You Wear It? Food Jewelry

When it comes to accessories, a fabulous piece of jewelry never fails to add some oomph to your outfit. I tend to fall back on the same old favorites: my mother’s turquoise ring, my gold boyfriend watch, or my floral bib necklace.

During fashion week, designer duds tend to steal most of the spotlight, but this spring I noticed a particularly quirky trend coming down the runway: food jewelry. Both Moschino and Dolce and Gabana featured similarly kooky pieces in their collections, with styles ranging from candy apple necklaces to earrings dripping in onions.

Spring Shoe Trends: The Hightop Sneaker

High tops

Created on ohthatsyou.com

The second installment of our spring shoe series is a bit trickier than its predecessor, the platform. Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, and Isabel Marant all sent high top sneakers down the runway last fall, and although once a skeptic, I now believe that these kicks can add some much needed edge to your ensemble. With the option to go for flat or platform, you can choose your height without sacrificing comfort – what more could we ask for?

To me, the most difficult part of this trend is incorporating it into daily life. These Chloe platforms are perfect for a polished, but laid back look. Try pairing your high tops with a cropped, drop-waist pant that tapers in at the ankles. Top them off with a simple tank and throw on a blazer for a bit more shape. Going out for drinks later? Shed your jacket to reveal fun back detailing. Add a splash of color with an interesting clutch, applying a similar shade to your nails. Beachy waves and a statement ring finish off this look perfectly.

Spring Shoe Trends: The Platform

With spring just around the corner, what better time to launch a new series revolving around one of our favorite things here on the OTY blog – shoes! The spring runway collections were filled with plenty of styles that we narrowed down into a few choice trends. The first? A classic throwback from one of the grooviest decades around – the platform.

After watching platforms reign supreme on runways like YSL and Proenza Schouler, I can’t wait to snag a pair for myself. What’s one way to rock ‘um? Despite its constant appearance on runways and fashion spread alike, color blocking is one trend that I have been hesitant to try out for myself. However, the bold colors that work best for this look mesh perfectly with a solid platform heel. If you’re new to the trend like me, try slipping on a pair of brightly colored pants and free flowing top. Apply lipstick in a similarly brilliant hue for an extra zap of color. Try a multicolored platform if you’re feeling a bit bolder.
