Style Olympics: Contributor Calli is All About California
I grew up in a beach town right outside of the city of Los Angeles. Southern California has such an eclectic mixture of cities and suburbs that I find directly responsible for my widespread style spectrum. I’m always playing with different genres of fashion from bohemian, to rocker, to romantic, but in a subdued way. That is because Los Angeles is the subdued version of New York. It is pretty “cool”, but a little bit more relaxed than the East Coast when it comes to fashion and trends.
No matter what look I am going for, I always tend to mix in my classic pieces. The array of vintage stores and boutiques present in L.A. actually encourage me to do so. I find that when in doubt, denim (in any cut), Converse or a pair of kickass black stilettos can complete just about any outfit here. As a reflection of this, I often find my style to be casual yet chic. I love transitioning from being relaxed at the beach by day (bikini, jeans, tank top) to then looking my best that same evening at a chic event. The climate allows for this eclecticism and my closet abides by it.
Aside from that, I have always been enamored with old Hollywood glam. Although I owe some of my love for classic glamour to my semester abroad in Italia (let’s just say if it is “Made in Italy” it has my heart) I find that parts of Los Angeles still evoke that classic style in these contemporary times. The city is still full of people driving their vintage convertible Mercedes in chambray shirts with their Ray-bans on. Women have red lips, lined eyes and soft curls that bounce as they pass an array of scattered palm trees and office buildings. Fashion in the Los Angeles area is truly a case of something my past roommate once described as, “when vintage meets modern” and I find that to be the best description of my style.
