Master the Going Out Look – No Matter Your Age
Whether you count down to 5:00pm freedom on a Friday or drinks with the girls is a nightly occurrence, everyone enjoys going out. Yes, we love the social aspect, but a significant portion of the thrill of the evening is deciding what to wear. I love to go through my closet and try things on until I come up with the outfit. But I get it, not all of us are as enthusiastic about putting together that perfect “going out” ensemble, especially when it comes to looking age-appropriate. Therefore, I’ve compiled a guide on doing the perfect nighttime look, whether you’re 21 or 45. Read it, add a bold piece of jewelry or two and you’ll be able to hit the town that much sooner. Hello happy hour!
In your twenties, you can get away with more adventurous and cutting-edge styles – lucky girl. Take advantage of it and don’t be afraid to experiment with different silhouettes, colors and patterns until you discover an aesthetic that best suits you. The idea is to look your age and not like you’re trying too hard to be “mature.” When I’m buying pieces for evening-appropriate ensembles, I tend to select items that are dressier versions of my weekend wardrobe. For example, my day uniform is usually skinny jeans and a t-shirt, so at night I often choose leather leggings and a crop top or a fancier blouse. Add some statement jewelry, hot shoes and a bag in a contrasting hue to make it clear that you are ready for cocktails, not lunch.
By now you probably have a fabulous collection of work wear so it’s the perfect time to invest in your evening attire. Chances are, you’re still sporting a look similar to the one you wore in your twenties, so don’t be afraid to give your going out look a tweak at this point in your life. Look for unexpected pieces such as sequined trousers or a metallic jacket that can become your signature. Pair your star pieces with staple items already in your closet, like skinny jeans or a simple black tee, so you don’t look overdone. Similarly, if you go for a bold piece of clothing, keep your jewelry, bag and shoes simple or vice versa.
Now they say forty is the new twenty, but as I’ve mentioned before that should not apply to your going out wardrobe choices. The key to dressing successfully is embracing your age. Leave the crop tops and micro shorts to the twenty-year-olds and opt for a more polished look. Choose one area to highlight, such as your legs or décolletage – not both – and don’t be afraid to invest in an amazing dress that shows off your best features. Mix some of your work basics, like your go-to pencil skirt, with a sexy top too. Finish the look off with a killer pair of heels, a cocktail ring and woven metallic clutch for a look that is right on trend.
What do you normally wear to go out? Are you a LBD type or girl or are skinny jeans and a dressy top your signature?
