Learning the Ins and Outs of Effective Hair Removal: Waxing

In part one of the ultimate hair removal giude, I discussed the pros and cons of shaving. Now for part two, I will give you the lowdown on waxing, another common hair removal method. There are a range of types, from traditional hot waxes to sugar waxes. You can go to a professional or you can do it yourself with an at home wax kit.

Pros: It removes hair at the root, which means the results are long lasting. With prolonged use, hair starts to grow back thinner and less frequently.

Cons: Yes, I know it can be painful. Some people take an Advil prior to waxing to reduce pain and inflammation. Salon visits are initially expensive but when you consider how long the results last, they aren’t unreasonable. If you want to go the DIY route, it takes practice to master the art of holding skin taught, while ripping the strip off in a fluid motion. Those with sensitive skin need to be careful as the area can be read or inflammed for up to 24 hours after your wax, especially if you accidentially rip off a layer of skin! Finally, your hair has to be at least 1/4″ long, otherwise the wax won’t have anything to adhere to.

  • Good for: Bikini, arms, face, lower back
  • Lasts: A few weeks to a month
  • Pain: Medium to high, depending on your pain tolerance and how sensitive the area you’re getting waxed is.
  • Try: Bliss Poetic Waxing Kit
