Resort 2013 Inspiration: Chanel Brings Victorian Style to the Street
It’s hard to believe, but the Resort shows have already started rolling out onto the catwalks. For those who may not be too familiar with the rapid cycle that is fashion, Resort (also known as “Cruise”) was a small season initially created for those who spent the winter holidays abroad – aka the very, very wealthy jet-setters of yesteryear. Nowadays, it’s an in-between period for retailers to beef up their stock before the spring shipments arrive. These warm-weather inspired collections also happen to conveniently come out just as spring is ending, so for me, they’re a fresh dose of summer style inspiration.
Chanel kicked things off at (where other than) the gardens of Versailles. It seems as if designer Karl Lagerfeld’s newest bestie, Internet-sensation turned famed rapper Azealia Banks, has been rubbing off on him lately as the looks most definitely infused her street kid credibility and penchant for zany hair dye. Interestingly enough, Lagerfeld juxtaposed this hip-hop edge with a nod to Victorian France by featuring plenty of ruffles, brocades and ladylike elements.
How to Do It:
This royal rapper look definitely walks a fine line between crazy and crazy cool, so I urge you to use precaution when styling your own mashed up summer ensemble. First, I would play up the metallic accessories using golden cuffs, tiny shoulder bags and platform sneakers. Base the outfit off of a voluminous, feminine mini skirt and contrast it with a t-shirt or shiny tank. Then toss on some chunky, short necklaces, a floppy hat and maybe even a floral hair pin or two (don’t worry, it’s okay to be excessive in this case). To get the pretty in pink makeup look, use an all-purpose eye cream that can also be smudged on your cheeks and lips. Hair dying is optional and only suggested for the most advanced fashion die-hards.
Time to hit the streets, and who knows, you might be mistaken for the next downtown it-girl.
