Hair Tutorial: Ballerina Bun

Aw, the ballerina bun. A far leap from the Sunday-morning-throw-your-hair-up-for-a-bagel-run look. This bun is a more elegant than a messy rendition, giving you more height and sophistication, like the swan princess herself. Not to mention, it’s classic, quick, and leaves little to no damage to your locks.

Although the bun is seen more often sported at day rather than night, a sleeker look like this is great for a cocktail party or night out on the town. Remember, ensembles with high necklines and detailed backs are the perfect pairing with this high bun, and if you feel a bit bland without your hair upon your shoulders, a striking eyeliner or bright lip is just the trick to spice your look up.

What to do:

  • Step 1 – Cut off the corner of a sock. I suggest using a sock closest to your hair color.
  • Step 2 – Roll the sock into a donut shape. They do sell hair donuts at beauty supply stores, but a sock is more accessible.
  • Step 3 – Put hair into a high pony (the higher the better)
  • Step 4 – Place Sock around pony tail.
  • Step 5 – Split hair into small sections.
  • Step 6 – Wrap sections around sock, securing with bobby pins. If you have thinner hair, tease the sections before wrapping around the sock.
  • Step 7 – Continue with each section, so that the sock is completely covered.
  • Step 8 – Spray with hairspray if you want a firmer look.
